Old Man Prickly Pear

Common name:Old Man Prickly Pear
Botanical name:Opuntia erinacea

Opuntia erinacea is a shrub that reaches 2' tall and forms 4' wide clumps. This cactus has pads that are 2.5" wide covered with areoles. Pink flowers, 2" in diameter, bloom in spring. The fruit is barrel-shaped, fleshy and may be covered with spines. It is edible. Fruit matures during the summer. This cactus is cold tolerant to 20 degrees F. Be careful handling this cactus as the fine hairs, also known as glochids, can irritate skin.

Mountain Flame Hummingbird Trumpet

Common name:Mountain Flame Hummingbird Trumpet
Botanical name:Zauschneria garrettii 'Mountain Flame'

Another Z. garrettii cultivar, 'Mountain Flame' has the same brilliant orange to scarlet trumpets mid-to-late summer, and dense, light green leaves. It is taller than 'Orange Carpet,' growing about 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. It blooms earlier than Z. arizonica. A wonderful addition to the perennial border, or along the edge of a sunny shrub or foundation border. Attracts hummingbirds.
